How to write a good one (examples)
- In 2023 I spent a weekend adding a caching layer to speed up our API — it was already fast enough. The real bottleneck was one N+1 query I'd ignored because it wasn't the 'interesting' part. Lesson: I optimize what I want to build, not what's actually slow.
- Early on we shipped a feature a big customer 'definitely needed.' Nobody used it. We'd never asked a second customer. Lesson: one loud request isn't demand.
- I once spent three days debugging a payment bug that turned out to be a timeout someone tuned at 3am during an outage — a magic number I almost deleted. Ugly code is often compressed incident history.
Keep it specific and true. A real detail (a time of day, an amount, a name) is what makes a post sound human — and safe, because it actually happened.
